With the rapid modernization of Malaysia, the kampong house (Malay vernacular houses) and other pre-existing vernaculars have been replaced by modern architecture. The Malay Kampung House is Malaysia most common local traditional architecture context that can found in anywhere of the rural area. Contemporarily, the quality of residential functional spaces has been mostly based on style and modernity rather than the tradition of that particular regional context. The artifice of Malay vernacular houses is involved with the religious beliefs that were based on Malay Islamic culture. The discussions are based on reviews of related researches and literatures from different sources including books, journal and conference papers. The paper also explains the prefabricated nature of the Malay house and consequently advances a hypothesis of the ‘rules’ for its façade treatment. Many of the vernacular Malay houses were built in the 1900’s and are still standing today. Once look at 11 of them, its look alike but the styles is vary from state to state. This study defines these houses as 'modern' vernacular Malay houses and attempts to explore the typologies of such houses built during the 1900s in KB.
